Which Charger Fits My Laptop? A Simple Guide for UAE Buyers

Different laptop chargers with different pin types – Dell, Lenovo, HP, MacBook, USB-C

It always happens at the worst time. You open your laptop at 11 PM to finish a report, and the charger light is dead. Or you left it in a hotel in Abu Dhabi. Now you need a new one — fast.

Here's the problem: almost every laptop charger looks the same. Black box, black cable. But inside, they are very different. Buy the wrong one and you either waste money, or worse, you damage your laptop.

The good news? You only need to check three things. Let's go through them like you're standing in front of the shelf.

1. Voltage (V) — this must match exactly

Pick up your old charger (or turn your laptop over) and find the line that says Output. You'll see something like 19.5V or 20V.

Example: Ahmed has a Dell Inspiron. His old charger says Output: 19.5V ⎓ 3.34A. So his new charger must also say 19.5V. A 20V Lenovo charger is not "close enough" — even if the plug somehow fits.

2. Watts (W) — same or higher, never lower

Watts tell you how much power the charger can give. If the label doesn't show watts, just multiply:

Volts × Amps = Watts
19.5V × 3.34A ≈ 65W

So Ahmed needs a 65W charger — or a 90W one with the same voltage and pin. A 45W charger would charge very slowly, or the laptop may show a "charger not supported" warning.

3. The pin — the part most people get wrong

This is where most wrong purchases happen. Two chargers can both be 19.5V and 65W, but have different tips. Here are the common ones we see in the UAE:

Laptop Common pin
Dell Inspiron / Latitude (newer) 4.5mm round, thin pin in the middle
Dell (older models) 7.4mm round, bigger
Lenovo IdeaPad / Yoga 4.0mm round
Lenovo ThinkPad Rectangular yellow "slim tip"
HP 4.5mm blue tip or 7.4mm
MacBook Air 2012–2017 MagSafe 2 (magnetic)
Newer laptops USB-C

Tip: take a clear photo of your old pin next to a coin. The coin shows the size, and anyone at the shop can match it in seconds.

What about USB-C?

USB-C makes life easier, but not every USB-C charger can run every laptop. A 20W phone charger has the same plug, yet it's far too weak for a laptop. For most work laptops, look for 65W USB-C or higher.

Your 30-second checklist

  1. ✅ Same voltage
  2. ✅ Same or higher watts
  3. ✅ Same pin type and size

If all three match, you're good to go.

FAQ

Can I use a 90W charger on a 65W laptop?
Yes, if the voltage and pin are the same. The laptop only takes the power it needs.

My new charger fits but the laptop says "not charging". Why?
Usually the watts are too low, or the battery itself is worn out. Send us a photo and we'll help you check which one it is.

Is a replacement charger safe?
Match the three points above and buy from a seller who gives a warranty, so you're covered if anything goes wrong.
