USB-C Cable 60W vs 100W: Will Your Cable Actually Charge Your Laptop?
Share
Here's a situation that confuses a lot of people. You have a good 65W USB-C laptop charger. You swap the cable for a cheap one from a phone shop, and suddenly the laptop charges slowly or not at all. The charger didn't change. The cable did.
Why the cable matters
USB-C cables are rated by how much current they can safely carry:
- 3A cables handle up to 60W (20V × 3A). No special chip needed.
- 5A cables handle up to 100W (20V × 5A), and newer ones up to 240W. These need a small chip inside the plug called an e-marker, which tells the charger "I can take it".
If the charger doesn't detect an e-marker, it caps power at 60W for safety. Some very cheap cables are only rated for phone charging and can't even do 60W reliably.
Which cable for which device?
| Device / charger | Cable you need |
|---|---|
| Phone, iPhone 15/16, tablet | 60W is more than enough |
| Chromebook (most use 45W–65W) | 60W works |
| Laptop with 65W USB-C charger | 60W works; laptop may draw slightly less than max |
| Laptop with 90W–100W charger (bigger Dell, HP, Lenovo) | 100W e-marked cable |
| MacBook Pro with 96W charger, Dell XPS with 130W | 100W e-marked (or the cable that came with the charger) |
How to check the cable you already have
Look at the plug or the packaging. Good cables print "60W", "100W" or "5A" on them. If there's nothing written, assume it's 60W or less. Thin, very flexible cables are usually lower rated. The brick also matters: a 100W cable on a 20W phone charger still charges at 20W.
A typical UAE example
Someone in Dubai Marina uses one 65W USB-C charger for both their HP EliteBook and their iPhone 16. A 60W braided USB-C to USB-C cable covers both devices. They don't need to pay extra for 100W unless they upgrade to a more powerful laptop charger.

FAQ
Is a 100W cable dangerous on a phone?
No. The phone and charger agree on power between them. A higher-rated cable just has more headroom.
Can a bad cable damage my laptop?
A badly made cable can overheat. That's the main reason to avoid unbranded, unrated cables for laptops.
Does cable length matter?
Slightly. Longer cables lose a bit more power. 1m to 2m is the sweet spot for laptops.
