MagSafe 1 vs MagSafe 2 vs MagSafe 3 MacBook charger tips compared

Which Charger Fits My MacBook? MagSafe 1 vs MagSafe 2 vs USB-C (UAE Guide)

MacBook chargers are confusing. Apple changed the connector three times, and many chargers sold online look the same in photos. Buy the wrong one and it simply will not fit your MacBook.

This guide helps you identify your MacBook charger in under 2 minutes, just by looking at the charging port.

The 4 types of MacBook charger

Connector How it looks Which MacBooks
MagSafe 1 Wider magnetic plug, T or L shape MacBook Pro and Air up to mid-2012
MagSafe 2 Thinner, flatter magnetic plug MacBook Pro Retina 2012–2015, MacBook Air 2012–2017
USB-C Small oval USB-C port, no magnet MacBook Pro 2016 onwards, MacBook Air 2018 onwards
MagSafe 3 New flat magnetic plug with USB-C cable Newer MacBook Pro 14/16 and MacBook Air (2021 onwards)

MagSafe 1 vs MagSafe 2 port and connector difference

How to check in 30 seconds

  1. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. Note the model and year.
  2. Look at the charging port on the left side.
  3. Match it with the table above.

Which wattage?

  • MacBook Air: usually 45W (MagSafe) or 30W (USB-C)
  • MacBook Pro 13": 60W–85W
  • MacBook Pro 15" / 16": 85W–96W or more

A higher wattage charger with the right connector is safe. The MacBook only takes the power it needs. A lower wattage charger may charge very slowly. Full comparison: 45W vs 60W vs 85W MagSafe 2.

A typical case

Say your daughter has a 2015 MacBook Air for school and the charger cable breaks near the plug. She needs a MagSafe 2 charger. A MagSafe 1 charger will not fit, even though they look similar online. This is the most common mistake we see.
