Lenovo charger tips round pin, rectangle slim tip and USB-C

Lenovo Charger Types Explained: Round Pin vs Rectangle vs USB-C

Lenovo has used three main charger tips over the years. If you have a ThinkPad, IdeaPad or Yoga and need a new charger, the first job is to find out which tip your laptop uses. It takes 10 seconds.

The 3 Lenovo charger tips

Tip How it looks Common laptops
Round pin (older) Round barrel with a pin inside Older ThinkPads like T420, T430, X230; many older IdeaPads
Rectangle (slim tip) Flat yellow rectangle ThinkPad T440 to T470, X240 to X270, E-series, many IdeaPads and Yogas
USB-C Small oval port Newer ThinkPads (T480 and later many), Yoga, Lenovo Chromebooks

Some Lenovo laptops also use a small 4.0mm round pin (IdeaPad 320/330, Yoga 510/710). Check your old charger label for 20V and the tip size.

65W or 90W?

  • Most ThinkPads and IdeaPads came with 45W or 65W.
  • Laptops with a dedicated graphics card or bigger screens often came with 90W.
  • A 90W charger with the same tip and 20V is safe on a 65W laptop. It may even charge a bit faster.

A typical case

Say you have a ThinkPad X250 and your office kept the charger when you left the job. Your laptop has the yellow rectangle port, so a 20V rectangle-tip charger fits. 65W is enough, 90W is fine too.
