Laptop Bag Size Guide: 14" vs 15.6" vs 16" (How to Pick the Right Fit)

Laptop bags are sold by screen size, but laptops aren't all built the same. A 14-inch laptop with thick bezels can be wider than a slim 15-inch one. That's why people buy a "15.6 inch bag" and find their laptop slides around inside, or doesn't zip shut.
Screen size is measured corner to corner
The number on a laptop (13.3", 14", 15.6") is the diagonal of the screen, not the width of the laptop. What actually decides whether a bag fits is the laptop's width and depth. As a rough guide:

These are approximate. The surest way is a tape measure: measure your laptop's width and depth, then compare with the bag's inner size on the product page.
Sleeve, slim bag or briefcase?
- Sleeve – goes inside a backpack. Light, protects from scratches.
- Slim bag with shoulder strap – laptop, charger, a few papers. The office favourite.
- Padded briefcase – more protection, for people who commute by metro or bus and get bumped around.
A UAE tip about water
It doesn't rain much here, but bags still get wet: a spilled water bottle in the car, AC drips in the parking, a sudden November shower in Sharjah. A water-resistant outer fabric is worth having for a few dirhams more.
A typical UAE example
An accountant in Abu Dhabi has a 14" Dell Latitude 5420. She also carries the charger and a small notebook. A 14–15.6" slim bag gives the laptop a snug fit with space in the front pocket for the charger. If she had a 15.6" laptop, she'd want a 15.6" or 16" bag instead.

FAQ
Can I put an 11.6" Chromebook in a 15.6" bag?
You can, but it will slide around. A smaller bag protects it better.
Will a MacBook fit?
A 13" MacBook Air fits a 14" bag comfortably. A 15" or 16" MacBook Pro needs a 15.6"–16" bag.
