Dell XPS Says "Slow Charger"? Here's Why and How to Fix It
Share
You plug in your Dell XPS and a message pops up: "Slow charger" or "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined." The battery goes down while you work, even with the charger connected. Annoying, and very common.
The good news: in most cases the laptop is fine. The charger is just too weak for it.
Why the XPS shows "slow charger"
Bigger Dell laptops like the XPS 15 and XPS 17 use a powerful processor and screen. They need more power than a normal 65W charger can give. When you plug in a smaller charger, the laptop warns you and charges slowly, or not at all under heavy use.
This happens a lot when people borrow a friend's USB-C charger or buy the cheapest one online.
Which wattage does your Dell need?
| Laptop | Recommended charger |
|---|---|
| Dell XPS 15 (9500, 9510, 9530) | 130W USB-C |
| Dell XPS 17 (9700, 9720) | 130W USB-C |
| Dell Precision 5550 | 130W USB-C |
| Dell Latitude 5420 / 7420 and most 13–14" Latitude | 65W USB-C is usually enough |
Easy rule: check the label on your original charger. Use the same wattage or higher. Higher is safe, because the laptop only takes what it needs.
Other reasons for the warning
- Damaged cable: a bent or cut USB-C cable can lower the power. Check near the plug.
- Dirty port: dust in the USB-C port is common in the UAE. Clean it gently with a dry soft brush.
- Docking station or hub: some hubs pass through less power. Try the charger directly.
A typical case
Say you work from home in Dubai with an XPS 15 and a 65W charger from an old laptop. During video calls the battery drops from 80% to 50% while plugged in. Switch to a 130W charger and the warning is gone, and the laptop charges while you work.

FAQ
Will a 130W charger damage my XPS 13?
No. USB-C laptops only take the power they need.
Can I use my phone's USB-C charger?
For a few minutes in an emergency, maybe. It is too weak for normal use and you will see the warning.
