Dell laptop charger 4.5mm vs 7.4mm tip comparison - Top Tech UAE

Dell Charger 4.5mm vs 7.4mm Tip: Which One Does Your Laptop Need?

You order a Dell charger online, it arrives, and the plug simply won't go in. Or worse, it goes in loosely and the laptop says "plugged in, not charging". Nine times out of ten the wattage was fine. The problem was the tip.

Dell has used two round barrel tips on most of its laptops over the last fifteen years. They look similar in product photos, which is exactly why people mix them up.

The two tips at a glance

4.5mm tip (newer) 7.4mm tip (older)
Outer size 4.5mm × 3.0mm 7.4mm × 5.0mm
How it looks Thin plug, about the width of a pencil lead holder Fat plug, noticeably chunkier
Typical laptops Inspiron 3000/5000 series, XPS 13 (older), Latitude 3000 series, Vostro Latitude E-series (E6400, E6420, E5440 etc.), older Inspiron N-series, older Precision
Rough era 2014 onwards roughly 2008 to 2015

The 30-second test at home

Grab a normal pen or a SIM eject pin. Now look at the charging hole on the side of your laptop.

  • Small hole with a tiny pin in the centre – that's the 4.5mm.
  • Big round hole, pin clearly visible, almost like a headphone jack but wider – that's the 7.4mm.

If you still have the old charger, the size is often printed on the brick label. Flip it over and look near the voltage line.

Then check the watts

The tip decides whether it fits. The wattage decides whether it charges properly. Look at the label under your laptop or on the old adapter:

  • 19.5V 3.34A = 65W. Covers most Inspiron, Latitude 3000 series and XPS 13 models.
  • 19.5V 4.62A = 90W. Usually bigger 15" laptops or ones with a graphics card.

A 65W charger on a laptop that shipped with 90W will often charge slowly and show a warning on startup. Going the other way, a 90W charger on a 65W laptop is fine, the laptop only takes what it needs.

A typical UAE example

Say you work in an office in Al Qusais and your company laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3567. You left the charger at home in Sharjah. You need one by tomorrow. The 3567 uses the thin 4.5mm tip and a 65W adapter, so a 65W 4.5mm Dell charger is the right match. A 7.4mm one would not even go in.

Which Dell chargers we stock

Every charger is tested in our Sharjah shop before it ships, and comes with a 12-month warranty and 15-day returns.

FAQ

Can I use an adapter to convert 7.4mm to 4.5mm?

Converter tips exist, but a lot of Dell laptops check the charger's ID through the centre pin. Cheap converters often break that signal, and you get the "not charging" message. Buy the right tip instead.

My laptop says "AC adapter type cannot be determined". Is the charger dead?

Not always. It usually means the centre pin signal isn't reaching the laptop. It can be the charger cable, the tip, or the laptop's charging port. Our guide Laptop Not Charging? 7 Checks walks through it.

Does Dell use the same tip on every model?

No. Many newer Latitude and XPS models charge only by USB-C. Always check the port first.

How fast is delivery?

1–2 working days anywhere in the UAE. Delivery is AED 20, free on orders over AED 1,000. Pay by card or cash on delivery.
